Center for the Book Publications List

Compiled and edited by John Y. Cole, Library of Congress Historian and former director of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.

Since its creation in 1977 by Public Law 95-129, the Center for the Book has sponsored or cosponsored the publication of more than 40 books and 150 booklets and pamphlets. This is a selective list of books and pamphlets of general and scholarly interest, supplemented by key articles that illustrate the broad range of the Center’s activities. It includes citations to publications relating to more than 30 symposia at the Library of Congress which focused on the history of books, reading, libraries, and literacy—nationally and internationally.

The list is arranged by subject and organized into several categories: books, history, specialties and promotion, in addition to a chronological list of the 32 publications in the Center’s Viewpoint pamphlet series. The Viewpoints also are described in the subject listing.

Most of the items in this listing were published solely by the Library of Congress; if not, the names of co-publishers or other publishers are listed. Further information about each publication is provided whenever appropriate; in several instances references to supplementary research materials are cited.

Publications with digital versions can be accessed by clicking the publication’s title or the link in the last section of each entry. Most of these publications are out-of-print. Many of the books and articles are available in the collections of the Library of Congress. For further information about any of these publications and related materials, contact Library of Congress Historian John Y. Cole at [email protected].

Many articles and supplementary materials are from the Library’s periodical news publications and the following is a brief chronology for reference:

1943–1983: The Quarterly Journal of the Library of Congress (QJLC)
1943–2011: Library of Congress Information Bulletin (LCIB)
2012–Present: Library of Congress Magazine (LCM)
